Members of Witney Youth Centre Youth Forum attended the election evening at the Windrush Leisure Centre, gaining knowledge of the process of the elections, including the odds of a hung parliament. Throughout the night reporting the unfolding events on the centre's Facebook page. All managed to stay awake!
Emma Stubbs, Chairperson for the Youth Forum stated; "this has widened our horizons to the world of politics".
Toran Boyce. Josh Douglas and Louisa Knight Youth Forum members stated: "The whole event was very intellectual, we learnt so much and will transfer the knowledge gained to further develop the Youth Forum across Witney over the summer period. We will be working on gaining more skills and knowledge with even more enthusiasm and looking forward to inviting local councillors to deepen our understanding of our local communities."
We would like to thank Bill Oddy, Head of Community Services for obtaining the security passes and fulfilling our dream of attending such an historic event.
Youth Worker Carol bad this to say: "Yes, this was a long night and didn’t stop there, we have continued to follow the events and share with many young people who would not usually take an interest.
In Youth Work as in all Young peoples Services Every Child Matters and I am privileged to be working with young people who have become inspired to take an active role in the future of young people within their communities and who have gained so much from actually observing the election night from the counting of ballot papers, asking questions and reporting to all our members, friends and colleagues, most going to bed by 2.30pm. We actually finished at 8am with a full breakfast and an evaluation of the night. An overwhelming experience and one we will never forget."
Because you asked for it; the Impulse Dance Project is starting up soon, after school on Monday afternoons. For the next 6 months, young people will be able to train with a professional Dance instructor, working to improve their skills and create performances. But if you want to 'Step Up' and get involved, you'd better get a move on -- classes start in November. Contact the centre for more details.
On Saturday 11th July 2009, Witney Youth Centre enrolled the services of graffiti artist, ‘Axe’ who shared his knowledge and skills with young people in a one-day workshop designed to produce a piece of artwork for the youth centre.

You can read more and see work in progress as well as the finished mural in The Gallery.
Witney Youth Centre, aka the PLATFORM, is starting a new health project in the new year, run by young people, volunteers and youth workers.
Sessions will start on January 23rd, and will run after school on Tuesdays (3.30-6pm). Young people will be able to access information and support on many issues – including eating disorders, homelessness, dealing with anger, bereavement, substance misuse, bullying, sexual health support and accessing other agencies, with the help of youth workers and information advisers, some of whom are young people themselves.
We're even hoping to fund a sexual health nurse who can provide even more information regarding contraception - and prescribe- watch this space!
If you can't wait till then, you can get information about all these topics and more in the online Survival Guide for young People.
The project is run by young people, volunteers and youth workers. If you want to get involved, please drop into the centre or give us a call.
We visited Avon Tyrrell activity centre 18-20th April for a residential. 8 young people attended where we stayed in self catering lodges in the new forest. The group took part in trust walks, problem solving exercises, raft building in the sheeting rain, 70ft high zip wire across a lake and archery.
Alongside this we did small group work around self/identity/trust/teamwork/communication.
It was a great weekend where some major achievements by all the group were had, from overcoming fear to working together whilst getting to know one another! All are getting an Oxfordshire Young People's Award for taking part.

We held the 2008 youth committee elections and unlike some parts of the world the results were released that night!?! We have a group of 4 young women and 4 young men who will be on the centre's youth committee starting in May!!! Congrats to you all and thanks to all that voted!
Recently young people from Witney Young People's Centre made a short film about issues important to them, and how young people are seen locally. It was a great experience, including storyboarding, filming as well as being in front of the camera!
See below for some pictures of the filming:
